African Well Fund is challenging supporters to walk A Mile in Her Shoes by participating in its annual penny fundraiser for World Water Day. The organization is aiming to collect a mile’s worth of pennies (84,480 pennies or $844.80) from March 15-22 in honor of those who have to walk miles each day to get water.
Each day in Africa, millions of people, particularly women and children walk for miles to get water. The chore of fetching water is no small task; water sources are sometimes miles away and the trip is sometimes made multiple times a day; water is heavy–a gallon of water weighs 8 pounds, women and children regularly haul 40 pounds of water per trip; very often the nearest water source is not even a clean one.
From March 15-22, AWF is asking supporters to pledge to donate pennies for their daily water usage. Participants can place containers like empty coffee cans or water bottles near toilets, sinks, water fountains and water coolers and encourage everyone to donate whenever they use water from that source.
Labels for containers can be downloaded here.
