In the middle of February, when winter seems loathe to loosen its grip on so many of us, we take a day to exchange tokens of love with those we care about. Whether it’s the passing of cards in elementary school classes, or a generous bouquet of flowers given to a friend or partner, Valentine’s Day is a spot of colour in an otherwise quiet time.

When we take those bouquets home, however, putting them in a water-filled vase to brighten a kitchen or living room, do we have to think about where the water for the flowers will come from?

To us, this small amount of water is nearly insignificant, used to keep flowers fresh for a while and then poured down the drain without even a thought; for others water is a daily struggle between life and death.

For African families, a daily supply of water can be miles away, and for many, these sources of water are dirty and contaminated. The facts don’t lie: 1.1 billion people in the world don’t have access to safe drinking water, roughly one-sixth of the world’s population.

These statistics are devastating, but the truth is you have the ability to change everything. Your simple action has life changing consequences. For a gift of $25 (less than the price of a couple of bags of Starbucks coffee), you can help us build safe, clean, life-giving water and sanitation projects in African Villages and communities, truly helping those in sub-Saharan African countries provide life with a sustainable water supply for their families.

This Valentine’s Day, give the gift of water to those in Africa and receive a mini water garden as our gift to you. Place your mini water garden in your window as a daily reminder of the gift of life that water is.
