March 22nd has been designated World Water Day. The theme this year is “Water for Life” and the United Nations is using this year’s observance to launch the International Decade for Action. The Decade, beginning today, provides the international community with an opportunity to refocus political and global commitment on water-related issues in order to achieve the water-related goals established in the Millennium Declaration.
The international observance of World Water Day is an initiative that grew out of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro. The United Nations General Assembly designated 22 March of each year as the World Day for Water by adopting a resolution.
