March 22 is World Water Day. Shoji Nishimoto, Assistant Administrator and Director of Bureau for Development Policy for the United Nations Develop Programme, issued a statement in support of the event. “Water is fundamental to development and poverty eradication. Availability of potable water is the most basic of human needs… However, lack of access to safe water and sanitation continue to impact the health and quality of life of almost half of humanity. Still 1.1 billion people lack access to safe water supply and some 2.5 billion lack adequate sanitation – with the predominate majority living in developing countries. For the full text, click here.
